2205 Stainless Steel

About 2205 Stainless Steel

Duplex 2205 is a family of stainless steel alloys that contain roughly equal amounts of ferrite and austenite. This two-phase material is composed of 22% chromium, between 5% and 5% nickel, and 3% molybdenum, resulting in an exceptionally strong and corrosion-resistant alloy. Due to its ability to resist corrosion, erosion, cracking, and pitting, 2205 stainless steel is ideal for use in harsh environments.

At Sandin Manufacturing, we offer many types of cables and hardware constructed from 2205 stainless steel. Learn more about its specific properties and benefits below.

Properties of 2205 Stainless Steel

2205 stainless steel is a versatile material known for its numerous beneficial properties. When used in cable manufacturing, it offers exceptional durability and corrosion resistance, making it suitable for a wide variety of demanding applications.

Mechanical Properties

In the duplex 2205 family of stainless steels, grade S32205 has similar mechanical properties to those of S31803. This alloy offers exceptional mechanical properties, with yield strength, tensile strength, and toughness that far exceed other austenitic stainless steels. The mechanical properties of duplex 2205 include:

  • Elongation minimum: 25% in 50 mm
  • Hardness: Brinell (HB): 293 maximum, Rockwell C (HR C): 31 maximum
  • Tensile strength minimum: 621 MPa
  • Yield strength (0.2% Proof) minimum: 448 MPa

Physical Properties

As a two-phase family of stainless steel, 2205 features a combination of the physical properties found in austenitic and ferritic stainless steels. While there are multiple grades of 2205 stainless steel, grades S31803 and S32205 are very similar to one another and display virtually identical physical properties.

The physical properties of duplex 2205 include:

  • Density: 7800 kg/m3
  • Elastic modulus: 190 GPa
  • Electrical resistivity: 850 nΩ.m
  • Mean coefficient of thermal expansion: 0-100 °C: 13.7 μm/m/°C, 0-315°C: 14.2 μm/m/°C
  • Specific heat (0-100°C): 418 J/kg.K
  • Thermal conductivity at 100°C: 19 W/m.K

Corrosion Resistance

Since duplex 2205 contains ferrite, it performs well in caustic environments. In addition, its high molybdenum, chromium, and nitrogen levels deliver excellent resistance to corrosion, pitting, and chloride stress cracking.

Heat Resistance

Duplex 2205 offers good oxidation resistance at high temperatures. However, it is not recommended for use at temperatures above 572 °F (300 °C), as it can experience embrittlement under these conditions.

High Strength

2205 stainless steel offers greater yield and tensile strength than many other austenitic stainless steels. Its duplex structure provides a superior strength-to-weight ratio, making it ideal for reducing structural weight without sacrificing performance. This advantage is especially valuable in industries like oil and gas, where materials must endure extreme pressure and mechanical stress.

Good Weldability

Although welding duplex stainless steels such as 2205 can be more challenging than welding austenitic grades, 2205 still offers good weldability when correct techniques and procedures are used. In some cases, post-weld heat treatment may be required to prevent excessive hardness or brittleness in the weld area.

High Fatigue Strength

Fatigue strength is an important quality in cables, which must often withstand repeated loading and unloading cycles. 2205 stainless steel offers high fatigue strength, even under corrosive conditions.

Ductility

Although 2205 stainless steel offers high strength, it also maintains a degree of ductility, allowing it to be formed and shaped without difficulty. This makes it well-suited for producing a variety of components.

Benefits of 2205 Stainless Steel

Due to its unique chemical composition, 2205 stainless steel offers many advanced performance capabilities. Some of the biggest benefits of using this material in cable applications include:

  • Cost-effectiveness. With its superior strength and corrosion resistance, duplex 2205 is a long-lasting material with reliable performance. Its longevity makes it a more cost-effective option than other stainless steels, despite its initial higher cost.
  • Enhanced corrosion resistance. 2205 performs well in acidic, sulfuric, and chloride-rich environments, resisting stress and crevice corrosion. Its excellent corrosion resistance makes it a reliable option for chemical processing, desalination, and marine applications.
  • High strength-to-weight ratio. Duplex 2205 offers a higher strength-to-weight ratio than austenitic stainless steels, making it an ideal option for applications that require minimal weight yet maximum durability.
  • Improved fatigue resistance. Components made from 2205 offer high fatigue strength and durability under fluctuating loads.
  • Versatility. 2205 cable and wire are suitable for a multitude of applications. Its durability and advanced performance accommodate diverse operating environments.

Applications of 2205 Stainless Steel

2205 stainless steel is an ideal alloy for demanding projects. Due to its advanced performance capabilities, it’s suitable for many challenging applications, including:

  • Biofuel manufacturing plants
  • Chemical processing, storage, and transport
  • Effluent scrubbing systems
  • Food processing equipment
  • Pulp and paper equipment
